Piping Designer

Under general direction, plans and establishes design criteria for specific portions of a project, applying engineering principles, material properties associated with construction, installation and maintenance procedures.


Prepares drawings of unusual, complex original designs, which require a high degree of precision.

Originates functional designs by using information derived from equipment or facility specifications, general design criteria and data supplied by Engineers. Can perform basic calculations to support the design.

Checks manufacturer's prints, prepares plans and provides design sketches for preparation of finished design drawings and the refinement of technical requirements for general layouts.

May control entire scope of a design project where practical knowledge in a particular functional area and standard design practices are applied.

Will direct and/or check work assignments of less experienced drafting personnel.

May be required to take advanced training in 3D Cad software.

Field assignments will be required to gather information required to perform the duties above, client meetings, assist in resolving construction problems and to assist in commissioning.

Perform all duties as specified by the Manager and appropriate within this job classification.

  • Education and Work Experience:

    Associate’s degree or equivalent from two year college or technical school or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    7-10 years of experience in drafting and design.

  • Language Ability:

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret company standards, contract specifications, drawings, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and to respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

  • Math Ability:

    Ability to perform less complicated established design calculations in a particular functional area. Calculate figures and amounts such as area, circumference, and volume; weights, proportions, percentages and the ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

  • Reasoning Ability:

    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in oral, written, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Computer Skills:

    Must have a proficient working knowledge of Microstation and Autocad. Must have completed a 3D Cad training course and have a basic understanding of 3D Cad.

    To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Word, Access, Outlook, Power Point, and Internet Explorer.


    This job has supervisory responsibilities for directing drafting execution of the designs developed by this individual.
